Ah, interesting! That is an interesting question that could be a whole blog topic on its own. Best handled by someone more knowledgeable than I, as my interest lies in the place where being a music fan and a Web 2.0 practitioner overlap.

Thanks a lot for reading and commenting!

Thanks for the details, Johanna. The reason I ask is that I'm interested in how the received wisdom stays in place. I'm not trying to convince you one way or the other.

Hey Lucas,
Thanks for your comment.
I definitely overstated online music sharing as the "cause" of music industry troubles (and I am adjusting my post a bit to correct that). It is well know, at least in my circles, that illegal sharing of music has created problems for some record labels, as well as the artists they represent. Also, it seems clear to me that the buy-a-produced-album-in-the-store way of doing things is not working any more. And that is, in part, because many people have easy access to music online. Even where people are paying for music downloads, this new situation creates an incredible opportunity for a new model, bringing music and Web 2.0 together.

Hi Johanna,

CASH is the shiznit, and it's cool to see you talking them up.

I'm curious -- what makes you think that unauthorized distribution is the cause of problems in the recording industry? Also, what gives you the impression that "everyone knows" that?

Thanks.
